I’m currently in Vietnam, this sort of thing has happened a few times in conversation (along with just calling it “BL”, because that’s how Korean yaoi is labeled, while not knowing the words boy or love)

By speaking a different language where the terms for gay people might be considered derogatory?

Manga is popular in a lot of countries, so grasping for the word yaoi would be a way to describe it in a supporting manner
